JEFFERSON CO. GA. CHAPTER SCLC
AND THE BURKE CO. SCLC CIRCUIT
Launches a fact finding mission in the case of the
Firing of Mrs. Annie L Cooper, from the Burke Co.
School System as unfair and grave injustice
The Jefferson Co. Ga. Chapter of the SCLC and the Burke Co. Circuit addresses a Community Issue with the Burke Elementary School and the Burke County Board of Education in the firing of Mrs. Annie L. Cooper who was employed at the Elementary School for more than three years.
Mrs. Cooper came to our Chapter with a complaint, that during an employee meeting on Oct. 19th 2010, her immediate Supervisor reprimanded her and other custodian employees for improper or slack work details, she stated that at the end of the meeting, the Assistant Principal said to them that, “if you all have anything to say!, say it now!, don’t wait till you get behind my back.!”
Miss Cooper stated that she then said to the Assistant Principal that if she had anything to say that she would say it to him face to face.
Miss Cooper Stated that she returned to her work station to continue her work at around 12:15 p.m., she said that she was feeling shaken and upset about how the meeting was conducted and ended, that she was crying uncontrollably. She stated that she contacted her supervisor, Miss Brim via Portable radio and stated/asked if she could leave for the rest of the day and to her knowledge, and as heard by other employees who also had portable radios that she was granted the permission to leave work taking the remainder of the day off and she went home. When she arrived at her home she received a phone call from her employer, the Assistant Principal Bobby Moore who said to her, to turn in her uniform, that she had been terminated for walking off of her job.
After hearing her complaint, the Jefferson Co. SCLC and the Burke Co. Circuit weighed the complaint and decided to address this issue. Since this issue Mrs. Cooper’s Children has been harassed by the Burke Co. Elementary School, and her Children were forced to be removed from the School, and had to be enrolled into another School, only to be harassed by the next School because the Burke Co. Elementary School had called the next School with incitation and the Children were forced to be removed from that School also.
On Oct. 26th, 2010 the Jefferson Co. Ga. Chapter SCLC launched a fact finding mission in the firing of Mrs. Annie L. Cooper from the Blakely Elementary School in Burke Co. Ga. where she had been employed for more than three years.
The mission included an investigation of employees who had portable radios and heard the conversation of Mrs. Cooper and her Supervisor, when Miss Cooper asked to take the rest of the day off from her work.
The following employees gave these accounts via telephone to the Jefferson Co. SCLC president, Minister James Ivery:
_____________ , sister in law of Mrs. Annie Cooper Stated that she understood that Mrs. Cooper on radio asked to take the rest of the day off and the Supervisor granted permission
_____________, Stated that she heard on the radio that Mrs. Annie Cooper asked for the rest of the day off and that to her understanding Mrs. Cooper were given permission by the Supervisor.
_____________, stated that she heard on radio that Mrs. Annie Cooper asked the supervisor if she can take the rest of the day off and she heard the supervisor on radio grant Mrs. Coopers request.
Mr. Willie Jordan, the Burke Co. School Board member at the time Mrs.
Cooper took her firing to the board stated on Jan. 20th 2011 that after hearing Mrs. Cooper’s plea for help to the board, he felt that Mrs. Cooper’s firing was due to retaliation by the supervisor and that her firing was unfair, and that the board only took into account the supervisor’s statement.
Mr. Willie Latimore, School board member at the time Mrs. Cooper brought her case to the board Stated on Jan. 20th, 2010 that he felt strongly that Mrs. Cooper did in fact ask her supervisor for permission to take the rest of the day off and the supervisor granted her permission to do so, he also stated that her firing was unfair.
On Jan. 18th, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. the Jefferson Co. SCLC met with the Burke Co. Ga. Board of Education to present it’s case and to put the Board and Elementary School on notice that the Chapter has taken up Mrs. Annie L. Cooper’s case and has launched a full fact finding mission into her firing.
This investigation and fact finding mission is on going by the Jefferson Co. Ga. Chapter of the SCLC and the Burke Co. SCLC Circuit
